How to Join the Appraisers Association of America

The Appraisers Association admissions criteria are in alignment with the guidelines established by The Appraisal Foundation for Minimum Requirements for Personal Property Appraisers. We would be pleased to discuss which track most accurately matches your level of expertise. To begin the membership process, please send membership your current resume or CV, highlighting any relevant appraisal experience, and a sample appraisal you have completed (if available). Please call Johanna Levy, Membership Manager, 212.889.5404 x13 or email membership.

If you are transitioning from a related field, e.g., curator, dealer, auction specialist, collector, attorney, etc., and have a basic level (less than five years) of appraisal or connoisseurship and marketplace experience, we recommend the Comprehensive Appraisal Studies Program.

Once you have completed the program, we invite you to become an Associate of the Appraisers Association for three years, during which time you will develop your appraisal portfolio and have access to specially-designed programs for Associates. At the end of the three-year period, we invite you to apply to become an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association.

If you are transitioning from a related field, e.g., curator, dealer, auction specialist, collector, attorney, etc., and have five years of appraisal or connoisseurship and marketplace experience, we recommend the Accredited track, which will place you on the track to become an Accredited Member. Applicants are required to complete a series of courses with the Appraisers Association, including USPAP, Theory & Methodology, Appraisal Writing and Research Methods, followed by the submission of sample appraisal reports.

If you are transitioning from a related field, e.g., curator, dealer, auction specialist, collector, attorney, etc., and have at least ten years of significant appraisal or related connoisseurship and marketplace experience, we may place you on the track to become a Certified Member. Applicants are required to complete a condensed series of online courses with the Appraisers Association including USPAP, Theory & Methodology, and Elements of a Correctly Prepared Appraisal, submission of sample appraisal reports, as well as a certification exam which tests depth of knowledge in your area of expertise.

The entire process can take as little as six months, please note that once you initiate the application process, you must take all courses and submit all materials within a period of two years. You will be contacted by our Membership Manager before your candidacy expires.
