Printed maps, whether from woodblocks, engraved copper plates, or lithographic processes are intended to be multiples. The presumption is that there is always another example, even if we haven’t found it yet, i.e. Waldseemuller’s ‘Universalis Cosmographia’ of 1507, to compare it with. The appraised value of a map often corresponds to scale, condition, subject, color, and of course the story that the map reveals and the very subjective concept of beauty. This talk will shed light on all of the above, with particular reference to the current market, and highlighting practical tools available to every appraiser.
