2019 Of Value: National Conference Evaluating the Cleveland School of Ceramic Sculpture Thomas Folk, Ph.D., AAA, Art Historian and Appraiser During the Great Depression the focus in American ceramics shifted from the vessel to ceramic sculpture. Under the leadership of Guy Cowan of Cleveland's Cowan Pottery, a group of ceramic artists, including Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost, Russell Aitken, Thelma Frazier and Edris Eckhardt, bought national attention to ceramic sculpture as a viable new medium. Waylande Gregory shifted this sculptural medium further, creating monumental public works, meant to be seen outdoors, rather than a an indoor vitrine, which had largely been the norm until then. This lecture will discuss the shifting values for this group of sculptors. 1.5 CE credits Sponsored by: Betty Krulik Fine Art, Limited FEES $25 Members $35 General Admission | Tom Folk is an art historian and appraiser, best known for his work on the Pennsylvania Impressionists.
