Seeing the Light: Unpacking Criteria of Value in Modern Photography

Lucy von Brachel, LVB Photography Consulting & Appraisals LLC
Wine and Welcome - 5:50pm
Lecture - 6:10pm
Reception - 7:20pm

Despite photography’s relative youth as a collectible medium, it became ubiquitous by the end of the 19th century and accessible to artist and amateur alike.

Today, photography is so prevalent that appraisers from most specialties will encounter it in collections, estates, and archives of all kinds.  It can be challenging to determine when to call in an expert or to lump a photograph in with ephemera or decorative objects.

Furthermore, photography is a technical and complex medium that can confound the most knowledgeable experts. This ubiquity and complexity often necessitates a level of connoisseurship for an appraiser that is beyond what can reasonably be expected of a generalist or specialist in another medium.

When does it matter whether a photograph is signed or stamped?
What is a “vintage” photograph and why does it matter?  Why do prints of the same image often sell at auction for wildly disparate prices?

In this lecture, Lucy von Brachel will discuss what to consider when appraising photography, the inevitable obstacles and idiosyncrasies, and reliable resources to turn to for guidance.

Please note that at the 5 minute mark, the sound cuts out for about a minute. However, overall the content outweighs any blips in the recording. Enjoy!
