Art depicting the West, with its cowboys, Native Americans, and scenic vistas, is a uniquely American genre. In this lecture, Reagan Upshaw, AAA will provide a brief history of the genre, including the first artists to document the Native Americans (Catlin, Miller, King, and others). Upshaw will discuss two major landscape painters to visit the West during the 19th century (Bierstadt and Moran), as well as Remington and Russell, whose paintings continue to influence popular conceptions of the frontier, as filtered Hollywood designers. The lecture will also include 20th century artists in the field, such as the Taos Society of Artists, and end with groups such as the Cowboy Artists of America, who are still active.

Mr. Upshaw will speak extensively on the issues involved in
setting a valuation on Western art, including the differences in values involving the subjects depicted. He will also discuss the perennial issue of Remington bronzes.
