Digital images, which are ubiquitous in popular culture, This program will provide appraisers with special opportunities to learn about photography’s earliest images and better understand mechanisms associated with the ne art photography marketplace. In the morning Steven Kasher will discuss fashion, civil rights and street photography at his gallery. After lunch, Daile Kaplan, AAA will introduce photobooks followed by Erin Waters on daguerreotypes and vernacular photography at Swann Auction Galleries. Lastly, the group will explore 19th Century American and European photography with Charles Isaacs. Issues to be discussed include: identifying 19th-century photographic processes; valuing pictures when the maker is unknown; the role condition plays in assessing color works; understanding classifications like vintage; editions; the contemporary art vs. photography markets; the photobook; and more.
