John D. Ward received a B.A. from the University of Chicago and an MA from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, before joining Sotheby’s Silver department in 1997. In American silver, he has handled the Masco and Niederhoffer Collections, silver from churches in Quincy, Farmington, Milford, Derby and Dorchester, and the impressive collections of Walter Jeffords, Ruth Nutt and Iris Schwartz. The 2010 sale of the Loring Punch bowl by Cornelius Kierstede remains the record for American Silver. In European silver, Ward has offered the PatiÑo collection of Lamerie, the Poor Collection of Early English Silver, the Thyssen Meissonnier tureen, and silver and vertu in the single-owner sales of Saul Steinberg, Edmond and Lily Safra, Carl DeSantis, Gianni Versace, Brooke Astor, Bunny Mellon and the Princes of Hanover, as well as the Steinhardt Collection of Judaica.
