Valuing LGBTQ Issues in American Art
Registration Information
September 21, 2018 | 10:00am - 5:15pm
New York

Join the Appraisers Association for a study day on LGBTQ Issues in American Art.

The program will begin with instructor Tom Folk, Ph.D, AAA discussing the changing attitudes towards homosexuality in American culture from the "romantic friendships" of the 19th century to a general antipathy towards the "effeminate male" that came after the tragic ending of Oscar Wilde who visited the United States in 1882. There are now special groups of collectors focusing on gay artists.  How collectors perceive these artists today can in many cases affect their value.

The program will continue to the Whitney Museum to see the David Wojnarowicz exhibition with a teaching fellow-led tour of the show.

Next, the group will visit the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. At the Museum, Daile Kaplan, AAA, Vice President, Director of Photographs and Photobooks at Swann Galleries and former board member of the Appraisers Association, will join us to discuss the work of photographer Donna Gottschalk.

The program will end at the Soho loft of Charles Leslie, founder of the Leslie-Lohman Museum. Mr. Leslie will discuss their original interest in collecting gay art and the challenges that came along the way. We will view and discuss several extraordinary artworks from his collection. This will be followed by a wine reception hosted by Mr. Leslie.
