The Appraisers Association presents an exciting and comprehensive educational opportunity in Newport, Rhode Island. 

Day 1: Art and Design in the Gilded Era

  • Newport Art Museum: Extensive tour and discussion of 19th Century Newport paintings from the collection with Curator Nancy Whipple Grinnel - includes the work of John La Farge, John F. Kensett, Alfred T. Bricher, and William T. Richards.  Tom Folk will present current values for these artists.  

  • Lunch @ White Horse Tavern (included in the fee)

  • Trinity Church: Harle Tinney, the church’s head of tours, discusses Tiffany’s innovations in leaded glass focusing on distinguishing features, quality and construction, and how to recognize a Tiffany window. This well known colonial church houses 2 exemplary windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany

  • Salve Regina University:  View John La Farge’s Three Windows created for the Caldwell sisters of Newport.  William Vareika, an authority on John La Farge and Newport’s leading art dealer, will detail Mr. La Farge’s life and career.

  • Reception and Tour @ William Vareika Fine Arts: Here we will also view the gallery’s outstanding collection of 18th, 19th, and early 20th century American artworks, including works by John La Farge and William T. Richards.

Day 2: The Golden Age of American Illustration (1870s - 1950s)

  • National Museum of American Illustration (NMAI): Designed by Carrere and Hastings (architects of the New York Public Library) in 1898, this is one of Newport’s grandest mansions and houses the largest collection of American Illustration Art in the world, with major examples by Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth and over 150 other luminary illustration artists.  Museum co-founders, Laurence and Judy Cutler, will provide a behind-the-scenes tour and viewing of the temporary exhibition, Norman Rockwell and His Contemporaries. Dr. Folk will examine rising trends in the market for illustration art.

Changes or cancellations to your registration must be made by Thursday, July 23rd to receive a full refund. Cancellations made between July 24th and August 5th are subject to a 25% cancellation fee. There are NO refunds after August 5th

If the Newport program does not meet the minimum number of participants and we have to cancel the program, we will do so by Thursday, July 23rd. For this reason, please DO NOT book a non-refundable  flight or hotel for Newport until you receive an email confirming that the program will run as scheduled (from Lauren Snetiker, Programs Manager). Please note that the confirmation email you receive after registering and paying for the program is NOT THE SAME AS THE CONFIRMATION EMAIL you will receive in July regarding the status of the program.
