Appraisers’ skill set often overlap with those of collections managers, but appraisers may not know exactly what their role is in terms of caring for a collection. This breakout session will be a conversation among experienced independent collections managers who will give an overview of their expertise, the services they provide, and their thoughts on the future of the collaboration between appraisers and collections managers.

Maura Kehoe Collins is founder of Artiphile, an independent art advisory specializing in art collections management services, established in 1991 to promote the conscientious stewardship of cultural property in privately held collections. Artiphile implements museum-standard procedures for inventory, registration and cataloguing, conducts condition surveys, arranges for storage, installation and transportation, oversees loans, insurance and appraisal needs germane to the maintenance of any art collection, large or small. Trained in Asian art conservation, Collins worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art NY and the British Museum, London before shifting focus from the public to the private sector, and from repair to prevention and ultimately proactive succession planning. Collins guest lectures in CM at Sotheby’s Institute, NY, and has spoken at conferences such as NYCLA Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Institute, Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management Group, and The Art Business Summit, Ireland; memberships include PAIAM, ARCS and POW.

Suzanne Quigley is a founding board member of ARCS (Association of Registrars and Collections Specialists), Suzanne has also served on non-profit boards of the Museum Computer Network, Museum Loan Network and AAM-RC. In 2005, after extensive experience as department head for museum registration and collection management at the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museums and the Detroit Institute of Arts, Suzanne Quigley incorporated as Art and Artifact Services. AAS provides consulting and comprehensive collection management services to artists, estates, foundations, museums, and private and corporate collections. She regularly works with appraisers on behalf of her clients. Suzanne has organized panels and spoken on wide-ranging topics such as 'difficult’ art works, computerization, exhibition budgeting, time-based media, copyright, shipping by sea, and collection inventories.  She was invited to speak at the recent Art Business conference in NY, at ALI-ABANYU Art Law Day, the Nordic Museum Conference in Denmark, and the University Complutense in Spain.
