Appraiser's Statement

Fernando specializes in appraising and valuing printed books of all kinds and from all time periods. Fernando has worked in the rare book world for over 20 years. A native of South Texas, he was educated at Stanford (BA Linguistics), Harvard (MA Near Eastern Languages), and Rutgers (MLS). From 2001 to 2011, Fernando was librarian of the Grolier Club in New York City. As director of the Rare Books Program at the Palmer Library School of Long Island University from 2011 to 2019, Fernando taught courses on special collections librarianship, archives, descriptive bibliography, and book history. From 2019 to 2021, he was Senior Specialist in the Books and Manuscripts Department at Christie’s, where he focused on early printing, color-plate books, and cartography. Fernando was elected president of the American Printing History Association in 2022; he is also a member of the Grolier Club and the Bibliographical Society of America.
